We Analyzed 863,047 Reviews of Car Accident Law Firms. Here Is What Clients Actually Say.
While building our directory, we read the public record at a scale no client ever could: 863,047 written Google reviews across 5,869 U.S. personal-injury law firms, posted between 2012 and 2026. The pattern surprised us. Clients almost never complain about losing. They complain about being ignored. Here is the full breakdown, with the raw data free to download below.
What we found
1. Clients almost never complain about the outcome.
Only 0.8% of negative reviews mention a disappointing result. What fills the 1-star column instead: rude or uncaring treatment (22.7% of negative reviews) and communication breakdowns like unreturned calls and months without an update (16.5%). Clients forgive a hard case. They do not forgive silence.
2. Communication praise shows up in half of all happy reviews.
Our classification model flags reviews that praise how a firm communicated. 49.2% of positive reviews earn that flag, against 0.4% of negative ones. Keeping the client in the loop is the single clearest habit that separates well-reviewed firms from the rest.
3. Reviews are all-or-nothing.
1-star reviews (34,102) outnumber 2-, 3-, and 4-star reviews combined (18,835). 93.9% of all reviews award five stars. People who review an injury lawyer either loved the experience or want to warn you. There is no middle ground.
4. The firm-size paradox.
Firms with fewer than 50 reviews collect negative ones at 8.91%, more than double the rate of large firms. But the complaint that a client felt like a case number climbs as firms grow: from 2.2 per 1,000 negative reviews at small firms to 10.6 at very large ones. Small firms fumble more often. Big firms fumble in a colder way.
5. Client experience is improving.
The negative-review rate fell from 5.4% in 2018 to about 4% across 2024 through 2026, while yearly review volume grew more than four-fold. Firms watch their reviews now, and it shows.
6. Where clients are happiest.
Among states with at least 500 reviews, Idaho, Louisiana, Kansas, Utah, Massachusetts post the lowest negative-review rates. Wyoming, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, Pennsylvania sit at the other end. The full state table is below.

Methodology
Corpus. We collected written Google reviews while evaluating 5,869 U.S. personal-injury law firms for this directory, between June and September 2026. The reviews themselves date from 2012 through September 2026. We removed duplicate pulls of the same review by matching firm, author, timestamp, and text, leaving 863,047 unique written reviews. Reviews without text were excluded.
Classification. A language model read each review and flagged whether it describes a motor-vehicle accident case (667,975do) and whether it praises the firm’s communication. 820,642 reviews carry model tags. Complaint and praise categories use a published set of phrase patterns matched against the review text; a review can match more than one category, and 45.3% of negative reviews match at least one. The pattern list ships in the analysis script, so anyone can reproduce the counts.
Limits worth knowing. Google reviews skew positive: happy clients get asked to review, and unhappy ones self-select. Star ratings measure the client experience, not legal skill. State rows with fewer than 500 reviews were left out of the state table. None of this data feeds the FMAL Score of any single firm; this page reports the aggregate only.

Where does this data come from?
We pulled 863,047 written Google reviews while evaluating 5,869 U.S. personal-injury law firms for the FindMyAccidentLawyer directory between June and September 2026. The reviews themselves span 2012 through 2026. We removed duplicates, then ran every review through the same classification system that powers the FMAL Score.
Can I reuse these numbers or charts?

Do you name the best or worst firms in the study?
No. This page reports aggregate patterns only. If you want firm rankings, see our list of the 50 best car accident lawyers, which names one top firm per state.

A language model reads each review and flags the ones that describe a motor-vehicle accident case. 667,975 of the 863,047 reviews carry that flag. The same pass also flags reviews that praise how the firm communicated.
