What is the average car accident settlement?

Most car accident claims settle for modest amounts. The average paid bodily-injury liability claim was $28,278 in 2024, according to the Insurance Information Institute. A minor-injury claim often resolves in the low five figures. A crash with surgery, permanent injury, or a death can reach six or seven figures.

Why are these numbers so much higher than the average claim?

Selection. Firms publish the results they are proud of, which are their largest. A firm with a $40,000 settlement and a $4 million verdict puts the verdict on its website. So this data captures the top end of what firms achieve, not the middle of what claims are worth. That is why the median here is $1.7M while the average paid insurance claim is $28,278. Both numbers are real. They measure different things.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average car accident settlement?+

Most car accident claims settle for far less than the large verdicts that make headlines. The average paid bodily-injury liability claim was $28,278 in 2024, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Minor-injury claims often resolve in the low five figures, while cases with surgery, permanent injury, or a death can reach six or seven figures. The results on this page are the standout outcomes law firms chose to publish, so they run much higher than a typical claim.

Where does this settlement data come from?+

We collected the case results that 2,320 U.S. car accident law firms published on their own websites while building the FindMyAccidentLawyer directory in 2026. Each figure is the largest result a firm reported for a given accident type. Firms publish these for marketing, and we did not independently verify them. These are documented reported results, not a random sample of all settlements, so they should not be read as typical or average amounts.

How much are the largest car accident settlements and verdicts?+

Among the 5,181 documented results we analyzed, the median is $1.7 million and the largest reach the $50 to $60 million range. About 71% of the reported results exceed $1 million and roughly 23% exceed $5 million. Again, these are the firms’ flagship outcomes, not the value of an average case.

Which accident types produce the largest results?+

Truck accident results carry the highest median among reported outcomes at about $2.1 million, followed closely by car accidents and wrongful death at about $2 million. Bicycle and rideshare results tend to be lower. Commercial truck cases often involve larger insurance policies, which lifts the reported figures.

Can I cite or reuse these numbers?+

Yes. Journalists, bloggers, and researchers may cite any number on this page. We ask for one thing: link back to this page as the source. For firm-level recognition, see our list of the 50 best car accident lawyers.

Methodology & sources

All figures represent documented car-accident case results published by law firms in the FindMyAccidentLawyer directory. Each data point is the best result a firm reported for a given accident type — not a random sample of all settlements. Results are reported by firms for marketing purposes and have not been independently verified. Figures should not be interpreted as typical or average settlement amounts. Amounts below $1,000 and above $60,000,000 were excluded as likely parse noise or career-aggregate marketing totals respectively. Multi-office firms are counted once (per domain); the highest reported result per accident type is used.
